Microsoft Excel Description of 25 Basic Skills
 
New Workbook
Open a File Menu and select New.
Select the Tab containing the desired Template.
Select the Template you wish to use.
Conform the selection.
Save Workbook
Click on the Save button. The save button is located at the top left side of the Excel screen. It has a picture  of a diskette on it.
Close Workbook
Open the file menu and select Close.
Open Workbook
Click on the Open button (file folder top left)
Select the desired file.
Confirm the selection.
Save As
Open the file menu and select Save As.
Type the new file name.
Confirm the new name.
Text Attributes
To change the character formattinng of cells:
Select the cell  or cells by clicking or dragging.
Click on the desired button: Bold, Italic or Underline.
Font Size
To change the font size of cells:
Select the cell or cells by clicking or dragging.
Select the desired size from the Font size dropdown list.
Change Fonts
To change the font of cells:
Select the cell or cells by clicking or dragging.
Select the desired font from the font dropdown list.
Cell Alignment
To change the alignment of cells:
Select the  cell or cells by clicking or dragging.
Click on the desired alignment button: Align Left, Center, or Align Right.
Column/Row Size
Select a cell in the Row or Column to be changed.
Open the Format Menu.
Select Row then Height or Column then Width.
Confirm the dialogue box.
Numeric Format
Select the cell or cells by clicking or dragging.
Click on te desired button on the Formatting Toolbar:
        Currency Style, Percent Style, or Comma Style. Decimal Places
Select the desired cells by clicking or dragging.
Click on the desired button: Increase Decimal or Decrease Decimal.
Insert Row/Column
Select a cell in the Row or Column where you wish to Insert.
Open the Insert Menu and Select Rows or Columns.
Delete Row/Column
Select the whole Row or Column that you wish to Delete.
Open the Edit menu and select Delete.
Clear Data
Select a cell or cells.
To clear the contents, press the Delete key on the Keyboard.
Clear Formats
Select the cell or cells.
Open the Edit menu and select clear.
Select Formats from the Flyout menu.
Spell Check
If needed, select the range of cells to be checked.
Click on the Spelling button.
If the word is misspelled, select an alternative and click on Change.
If the word is correct click on Ignore.
Undo/Redo
To undo your last action, click on the Undo button.
If we change our mind again we can Redo the action by clicking the Redo button.
The Undo feature can undo more than one action.
To Undo several actions at once, click the arrow next to Undo, and select from the dropdown list.  Excel reverses the selected action and all actions listed above it.
Move Cells
Select the cells you want to Move.
Click on the Cut button.
Click on the cell where you want to paste the data.
Click on the Paste button.
Copy Cells
Select the cells you want to Copy.
Click on the Copy button.
Click on the cell where you want to Paste the data.
Press the ESC key to clear the blinking dotted lines.
Add a cell border.
Select the desired cell(s).
Open the Format menu and select Cells.
Click on the Border Tab.
Select the desired border.
Confirm the dialog box.
Using Auto Sum
Select a cell to the right of the desired Row or below the desired column.
Click on the AutoSum Button.
Confirm the Operation, by clicking the Enter button (check mark) on the Formula Bar.
Entering a Formula
Select the desired cell.
Type an = in the cell to start a Formula.
Enter the formula by typing in/ or by clicking on the cell.
Enter (check mark) the formula to confirm the operation.
Office Assistant
Click on the Office Assistant button.
Type the question or subject you want to find information about.
Click on the Search button.
Select the topic you are interested in from the list.
To close the Help window, click on the X button.
Help
Open the Help menu and select Contents and Index.
Click on the Index Tab.
Type the name of the topic you are interested in.
When the topic is selected in the list, click on Display.
To return to the Index Dialogue box, click on the Help Topics button.
To close the Help window, click on the cancel button.
